COLOMBIA V URUGUAY

0' Another all-CONMEBOL match, as Uruguay looking to move on from the Suarez controversy in the final group match. Colombia putting up one of the stronger performances of any team in the group stages. The winner here gets Brasil in the quarterfinals, who escaped against Chile. Should be a tension filled match as these teams know eachother well. Both teams won at home in their qualifying matches against eachother, and their last matchup at the world cup ended in a 2-1 win for Uruguay in the group stages of the 1962 edition.

15' Well both sides coming out cautiously, not wanting to go down an early goal. Good Physical play from both sides

29' And its an absolutely sensational goal from Rodriguez to open the scoring here. He traps the ball with his chest and then volleys it home. Muslera getting a slight touch but it hits the underside of the crossbar and goes in. An absolutely great goal, seemingly from no where, and now Uruguay need to find goals and find them without Suarez on the pitch.

45' At half time still just the one goal. Uruguay with a few opportunities themselves, but unable to convert. And its that lack of finishing that we've seen from the Uruguayan side, with the exception of Suarez against England, that has plagued them to poorer results than they might have hoped for this tournament. They'll have to do better in the second half to move on, but Colombia look in control and perhaps even daunting opponents to face in the next round.

50' The beginning of the end for Uruguay, its another goal by Rodriguez, who now has 5 in this tournament, and at least 1 in each match thus far. Its a brilliant cross in after the switch of play thats headed right back into the front of goal from the far post and Muslera is caught at the post and Rodriguez finishes nicely. Strong play from the young Colombian, and Uruguay now in desperation mode.

75' Time running out now for the Uruguayans, although they are pouring on the attack. Colombia defending well, but the few chances Uruguay have created they haven't been able to finish. And perhaps it would be a different story line with Suarez on the pitch, as the attack is really lacking bite today, both literally and figuratively.

Final' The Colombians playing excellently here today, and earning a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Uruguay have missed the attacking finish all tournament long. And Colombia have earned a date against hosts Brasil, and will look to pull off what Chile came so close to doing, and reach a World Cup semifinal for the first time. This is likely the last international appearance for Diego Forlan, last cup's golden ball winner.

BRASIL V CHILE

0' All set for the opening match of the knockout round. Its a rematch from one of last cup's round of 16 matches, where Brasil won 3-0. The hosts will expect to do similarly well here, although Chile have plenty of experience against Brasil, and should not be ruled out as a potential upset.

12' Brasil with the majority of the ball so far. Some excellent runs but not able to crack the Chilean defense yet. Chile not without some good possession, but nothing dangerous yet.

18' Its Brasil that open the scoring. Its David Luiz's first international goal, and it comes from a corner piece, flicked on to the far post by Thiago Silva and David Luiz doing just enough to get it into the back of the net, although on video replay it does look like it might have been an own goal. Its the start Brasil wanted, and now Chile will have to respond quickly if they want a chance. Brasil will be happy to sit back in defense and launch the occasional but very dangerous counterattack.

32' Well Chile silencing the fans wearing yellow with an equaliser. Its a poor mistake by Brasil in defense off of a throw in, and Alexis slots it past Julio Cesar right into the corner. Brilliant done, and Chile have done well to convert their chance. Brasil momentarily falling asleep, but they've woken up now, and all back to square one.

45' Right before the half, dangerous moments for both teams, but both defenses coping, just barely. Neymar perhaps going to ground and doing perhaps a bit too much acting. A good match though, and Brasil certainly look the stronger, but Chile is not out of it yet, looking to avenge their loss four years ago.

55' Well for a minute Hulk puts Brasil up, but the goal disallowed for a hand ball as Hulk perhaps using his arm to trap the ball. The finish was off his shin and into the side netting, and how close was that.

73' Neither team able to really construct anything here in the second half. Chile with one good opportunity with some excellent passing but Julio Cesar makes an excellent save. Lots of back and forth play from both sides, and both teams looking for that spark of brilliance to take the lead.

81' Oh my nearly a goal for Brasil on two occasions. Neymar gets a good head to a ball but its saved, and some excellent passing sees Oscar and Jo each with the ball right in on goal and being snuffed out by the Chilean defense, and a minute later a shot from Hulk saved as well. Excellent stuff by the Chilean keeper, and in the back for chile as they scramble to keep things level. Brasil turning it on though, and it looks like they'd rather finish this off without extra time.

90' Brasil unable to lift themselves in regulation, so its another 30 minutes of extra time here. Both sides almost looking as if they welcome it. Chile nearly looking as if they'd welcome going straight to penalties right now. Brasil looking the more lively, and they'll have 30 minutes to bring the crowd some relief.

105' The first extra time period looking just like the second half. Nothing particularly special from either team. Chile still look like they're just playing for penalties. Brasil unable to find the spark but looking the only people who can break the dreadlock.

120' Seconds before the final whistle and Chile finds a bit of space and the shot beats Julio Cesar but clangs off the crossbar. What an opportunity, and Brasil inches away from being sent out of the tournament! Brasil with the entirety of possession in the second extra time period except for that last opportunity for Chile, and a sigh of relief from an entire nation as it comes back off the cross bar. We're headed to penalties, and now Julio Cesar will have to come through for his country.

Final' And Brasil escape on penalties, 3-2. The final shot by Chile hits the upright and flies across the face of goal and nearly hits the opposite upright, an inch to the left and its in. Chile so close to pulling off the upset of a lifetime. Chile can't be upset with their performance in this tournament though. They've escaped from a group with both of the finalists from the last tournament, and pushed the hosts and favorites to the absolute brink. Brasil were very very lucky here, and after coming this close to elimination, you have to wonder if they'll ever give another team another opportunity to see them out. Only three wins away from lifting the cup now for the hosts, and what a start to the knockout round.

SOUTH KOREA V BELGIUM, ALGERIA V RUSSIA

0' Final match day in the group stage. Both Korea and Russia need help if they want to go through. Algeria goes in with a win, and needs help if they can only manage a draw. Belgium are in and would like to avoid Germany in the next stage, and can do so with a draw or a win. Perhaps slightly anticlimatic with no big names here, not without drama. Algeria and Russia are both teams that know how to score, and South Korea is by no means a pushover for Belgiums final match.

6' Well its an early goal for Russia. Its an absolutely beautiful header into the top corner as Kokorin elevates above the Algeria defense. Algeria put squarely on the defensive and they'll have to draw back a goal now. Russia should be happy with that and will look to build their lead as well.

20' Belgium with the better chances in their match, although Korea strongly on the attack here. Russia continuing to create chances for themselves as well, and Algeria so far able to defend but still looking for the counter punch.

45' Well, still only the early Russian goal as we enter halftime. Belgium nearly joining the score sheet but missing from point blank range. However right before the half a straight red is shown to a Belgian player for stepping on the leg of a Korean player, and Belgium will see the second half out a man down. Korea are not without opportunity, but really lacking that finishing touch in the final third. Algeria with some modest opportunities but nothing particularly threatening yet. As it stands Russia would be through to the next round, but Algeria are one goal away from going through instead.

60' Algeria find their equiliser and the crowd go wild. Its Slimani who finds a head to a free kick in magnificent fashion. The keeper coming out to the near side but then needing to back track to the far post and unable to get there. What a goal for Algeria, and now Russia will have to find another goal if they want another match here in this tournament.

75' Korea creating some excellent opportunities for themselves, but still lacking that attacking touch to put a distressing shot onto the keeper's path. Although the opportunities have been there, the finishes have been relatively pedestrian, and the Belgian keeper not thoroughly challenged today. The Belgians not looking particularly strong themselves in the final third, but they final crack through with a goal as a shot from outside the box is not handled well and a Belgian attacker is the first to clean up the rebound and he slots it to the near post past the keeper. The Algerian Russian match has really opposed up now though. Russia desperate for a goal, but Algeria not sitting back in defense, and are keep to attack themselves.

Final' Well its all over now, Algeria doing enough to hold on and are through to the next round. Russia will be disappointed with their performance, only managing draws against Korea and Algeria. The Belgians take all nine points, joining the Dutch, Colombians, and Argentina s the only teams to accomplish that feat.

GERMANY V USA, PORTUGAL V GHANA

0' Well all four teams still in it here in the final match day in Group G. Germany only needing a tie to escape the group in first place. USA need a draw to go through, but can still go through with a loss depending on the other result. Portugal need a win, and a win by several goals, and for one of Germany or USA to beat the other by several goals as well. Ghana in a similar boat, but a win by more than one goal and a USA loss sees them through. Exciting stuff, and everyone needing goals to see them through. Joga Bonito!

15' Germany with a stranglehold on the USA, and the USA have hardly had any touches so far. Germany passing extremely well, and with several dangerous crosses, two of which were unlucky to not result in goals. Portugal with the majority of possession in their match as well, with a shot clanging off the crossbar, but Ghana seeing a bit more light of day than the USA in their match.

30' Better play from both the USA and Ghana, right up until its an own goal by Ghana on a mistake clearing the ball to give Portugal the lead, ending up in the back of the net but not before hitting both the crossbar and upright. The USA creating a few chances for themselves, perhaps even threatening ones.

45' Half Time in both matches. Both Germany and USA perhaps unhappy with the way things progressed. Germany giving up a bit too much of the ball, and the USA unable to cleanly maintain possession. Ghana unfortunate to be down a goal, but not without opportunities themselves. They'll need to score two, and hope Germany scores themselves.

52' Oh my Klose inches away from his record breaking 16th career world cup goal, and Germany finding all kinds of space in the American defense now that Klose is on the pitch as well as Mueller. A minute later, its a beautiful save by Howard to deny Klose off a corner, but the rebound goes to Mueller who hammers it home into the far side netting.
57' Well, goals coming in pairs today, and its Gyan who ties id up for Ghana with a beautiful header to draw his side level. The Goal by Germany means that unless the US can find a goal, Ghana are through with another goal.

75' Ghana taking the majority of possession from the Portuguese now, looking very threatening. The US with a few chances as well, but looking very tired with heavy legs. Germany look fully in control of the match and destined to win the group now. Portugal will need to pour on goals to move one, but Ghana only needing one more unless the USA can manage a goal.

80' Well its Cristiano Ronaldo who scores from point blank range after the keeper can only knock a ball meagerly right to him. Portugal still need three more goals to go through unless Germany can score again against the USA. Ghana need to score two now quickly to move through.

Final' The US nearly scoring on a beautiful build-upand some excellent runs. Lamm hustles back to get a deflection and the ensuing corner nearly sees another close chance but the header goes just above the crossbar. No more goals to be found by either Portugal or Ghana, and the US despite the loss are through to the next round in the second spot. Germany wins their group, and their path to the final now includes France and Brasil, but no other traditional powerhouses.

HONDURAS V SWITZERLAND, ECUADOR V FRANCE

0' Final day for Group E, and its Honduras and Switzerland meeting eachother on the last match day once more in a replay from 2010. France in control of the group, and Switzerland must fancy their chances, although they'll have to take care of business against against Honduras, rebounding from a thrashing against France. Ecuador not with a chance, but they'll have to do better against France than Switzerland does against honduras, which is a tall task. Honduras all but out here today, They'll have to win and win convincingly and hope that France beat Ecuador. Should be a good set of matches.

6' Its an early goal for Switzerland. Its Shaqiri who comes through with a magnificent blast from outside the box and it curls right into the corner and tucks into goal after hitting the underside of the crossbar. Nothing the keeper could do, and its a fantasy start by the Swiss. They have full control of possession and look like they can put in several goals here today.

19' Both the european teams looking more than a match for their american opponents today. France seem to be relaxing a little bit, but have created a few chances for themselves that they havent been able to finish. Ecuador with only one or two possessions near the French box, but taking too many touches and not yet testing the French keeper. The Swiss still in full control of their game.

31' Its a second goal for Shaqiri as Switzerland catches Honduras on the counter attack. They found all kinds of space in the back and its a good finish. Switzerland look on their way to the next round. France creating chances but lacking the vigor they played with in their two openers.

45' Half time comes as neither Ecuador nor France can get a goal. Both with chances, but both keepers doing an excellent job thus far to preserve their clean sheets. A draw won't bother France, nor would even a loss unless both Ecuador and Switzerland find a flurry of goals. Winning the group of importance, as the runner up will have to face Argentina in the next round.

50' Well nearly a goal for France, but minutes later its the Ecuador captain who gets sent off on a straight red, perhaps questionably so. It was a tackle where he put his cleat on a frenchman's shin and rides it down his leg. Ecuador now with a tall task, they'll have to score down a man against a France team that looks very threatening.

71' A hat-trick for Shaqiri, as he makes World Cup history and becomes the first Swiss man to accomplish the feat since 1954. Its an excellent piece of dribbling and cross in that finds Shaqiri with the finishing touch. The keeper dives early and guesses wrong. France still creating chances but being held scoreless by a combination of bad luck and excellent keeping. They're unlucky to not find themselves up, but they wont be too much bothered.

Final' All over here. Switzerland able to advance but they'll face Argentina next. Ecuador should be proud of their draw, but its not enough to see them through. The Keeper doing an excellent job maintaining his clean sheet though, and France suddenly losing the finishing touch that has seen them score 8 in their last two matches.

24 June, 2014

IVORY COAST V GREECE, COLOMBIA V JAPAN

0' Final matches in Group C now, and of course its Colombia who are already through and likely topping the group. Both Greece and Japan needing wins and help to make it through. Ivory Coast are through with a win, and are through with a draw and a Japanese loss or a draw and a Japanese win of either 1-0 or 2-1. Colombia have looked strong in both of their matches thus far. So have the Ivory Coast, and both Japan and Greece will have to dig deep to find some special goal scoring if they want to move on. The winner of the group plays Uruguay in the next round, whereas the runner up plays Costa Rica.

15' Relatively tame play from both sides in the Greece Ivory Coast match, although the Greek keeper seems to be dealing with a back problem. That could prove costly. A penalty awarded to Colombia for a poor tackle in the box by a Japanese defender, and the strike taken into the center of the net and Colombia are on their way to winning the group.

30' Well neither team really willing to send many troops forward in fear of the counterattack in the Greece Ivory Coast match. Greece again needing a win, and a big one at that to go through. Finally on the counterattack, they nearly score. Its a beautiful shot from a through pass that beats the keeper but unfortunately hits the crossbar and bounces back off. Greece just not with good luck so far this tournament. Japan nearly scoring off a free kick in the other match, and they are looking strong on the attack. Colombia know they're through, and perhaps they aren't too bothered with the results either way.

41' Well its Samaris who finds Greece's first goal of the tournament. It's a mistake in Ivory Coast defense to give the ball away, and Samaris finishes nice to beat the keeper. And with Japan losing currently to Colombia, Greece are through if they can hold on to the win. Ivory Coast needing a goal now, and we're due for a very exciting second half.

45' And Japan finding goal now, its a beautiful header into the near post that the keeper can only get a slight hand too. All things level entering the half, and that'll make the Japanese task a bit easier in the second half. If Japan can manage the win, Greece will have to win by 3 to get even on goal differential with Japan. Exciting story lines in both matches, and plenty left to play for in the second halves.

55' The Japanese brought back to reality, its a second goal from Colombia. A beautiful piece of passing in the box finds a striker unmarked, and the shot send back across goal to the far post. That's poor defending from the Japanese, and they'll have to find two goals now if they want to go through. Greece and Ivory Coast playing a very open game. Ivory Coast playing strong on the attack, but Greece with a few dangerous opportunities on the counterattack.

70' Ivory Coast threatening well but Greece looking the more likely to score. They were unlucky again on a Karagounis shot that careens off the crossbar. Greece still reluctant to send men forward and Ivory Coast unable to counter a Greek counterattack. Passing will in the box though, and Finally they find their goal. Its beautiful passing and Gervinho finds Bony who slots it just past the keeper. The pressure back on Greece now, and the real question is can they score when Ivory Coast are staying back in defense now that they no longer need a goal. Japan still unable to find much luck against the Colombians, and the Colombians nearly scoring again on a few occasions. It looks like Japan are experiencing their last minutes in this tournament, while Greece now has 15 minutes plus stoppage time to find a goal or get sent home.

82' The Japanese dream nearly at an end, and its Colombia who are minutes away from becoming only the third South American team to win all their opening round group matches. Its a beautiful piece of play by Jackson, who chases down a long ball, brings it back onto his left foot on first touch and the slots it home. A brilliant piece of striking. And an interesting substitution, the Colombians send in their backup goal keeper for an international curtain call on the worlds largest stage. Its the 43 year old Mondragon who will finish off goalkeeping duties for his country.

90' Oh my its its another goal for the Colombians, they are putting on a show for their supporters. Japan simply unable to recover and defend the counterattack, and its a brilliant piece of footwork and dribbling by Rodriguez to create a little space before he beats the keeper.

90+1' And drama in the other match, its a penalty thats awarded to Greece. It was a beautiful ball in to space in the box, and Samaras gets tripped from behind before he can take a shot. And its Samaras himself that steps up to the spot and converts the penalty. Its a beautiful shot that just makes it past the keeper's outstretched hands. Ivory Coast suffering a tragic last second defeat.

Final' Japan testing Mondragon before its over and he finishes his international career with a great save as a Japanese attacker sees his way into space. Greece through as well on a last minute penalty, and Ivory Coast so agonizingly close, and they'll be disappointed to be going home early. Greece earning a date with Costa Rica in the knockout rounds, their first appearance in the World Cup where they've gone past the group stage.

ITALY V URUGUAY, COSTA RICA V ENGLAND

0' Final Match day in group D, and its Italy and Uruguay fighting for life to be continued in the knockout round. Italy only need the draw, Uruguay needing a win, so we anticipated a highly aggressive style of play from both teams. Costa Rica only playing for the right to play or avoid Group C winners, and a draw will see them guaranteed as the group winners, although even a loss might see them through on top depending on the score line in the other match. England will not want to go home without any points, and are playing for pride today. All attention on Italy Uruguay, and it should be another top class match from the group. Joga Bonito

15' A third of the way into each of the first halves, and good play thus far from all four teams. England showing spirit, and Sturridge creating havoc in the Costa Rica defense. Costa Rica playing very strongly in the midfield though, and having the majority of the early possession. Italy similarly with most of the possession, and perhaps some old habits flare up as on more than one occasion an Italian player has taken to ground too easily. Still no goals in either match, and all the tension in the world lying on the pitch with Italy and Uruguay still.

25' Important happenings in both match at nearly the same time. A beautiful free kick from Costa Rica clangs into the cross bar, denying what would have been a sensational goal. Balotelli drawing a yellow in the other match, but he's already on one and now will miss Italy's next match on suspension.

40' Approaching the half the pace in both games seems to have slowed. Italy almost look as if they're playing for a draw, which would be enough to see them through. Uruguay defending well, but they havent seen the ball as much as they might have liked, and need to do better in midfield. Currently they are playing up the wings, which always leaves open the chance for a dangerous cross and header, but nothing yet. Costa Rica putting on a show for their fans, with some brilliant touches in space and fanciful footwork. They know they're through and this is something of a victory lap before things get serious in the knockout round.

60' Well its nearly a goal in both games. England making some excellent runs down the sideline, but the final cross is snuffed out by the Costa Rican keeper Navas, who has had an excellent tournament thus far. A beautiful touch by Uruguay lifts the ball into the box but the striker cant put the shot on target. An excellent opportunity though. However, a minute later Marchisio sent off in a straight red, for yes perhaps a foolish challenge but perhaps underserving of a straight red. Italy will have to hold in defense for only thirty minutes more, and Uruguay would do well to use this to pick up the tempo, especially in their attacking half.

80' Admirable time wasting from the Italians, as they look to see out the game as a draw. They do have a few counter attacking opportunities, but never sending more than two men forward. However, a header by Godin off of a beautiful corner kick sees Uruguay scoring and going up, and now Italy will have to pick up the tempo and find a goal in the next ten minutes. Costa Rica and England still goalless, and the pace has slowed some. England still creating some good chances. Drama in the Uruguay Italy match though, and now Italy needing to turn it in.

Final' Heartbreak for the Italians, and perhaps they caused the damage to themselves. 80 minutes of cautious play full of time wasting and little attacking, and simply not enough time when Uruguay finally find a way to break through the cracks of the Italian defense. Italy have not missed the knockout round in consecutive world cups since 1966. England finally able to salvage a point, but its in highly undramatic fashion, and the real story is Costa Rica winning the group, and become the third CONCACAF team to win a world cup group (Mexico have done it three times, while the USA have done it twice). A phenomenal accomplishment, and they look very strong.

21 June, 2014

GERMANY V GHANA

0' A rematch here of the Boateng Derby from four years ago, where Germany were the ones to take three points in the group stage from Ghana. This time around, Ghana desperately needing the points, having already lost out to the USA. Germany the strong favorites here, and both Portugal and the USA will be rooting for a German victory.

15' An  exciting match thus far. Both teams with chances. Germany doing well probing the Ghana defense, but Ghana with some excellent chances on the counter attack requiring a few good saves by the German keeper. This is much better play from Ghana than what we saw against the US.

30' More good play from  both teams. Ghana defending well, but not being hesitant to send troops forward in the attack. Some brilliant play by Ozil and Mueller, and coming close but nothing yet. Ghana with a few good shots and opportunities themselves, definitely testing the German keeper but he's up to the task thus far. Both teams making excellent runs, and with support, but both also defending very well. A fantastic tactical match this has been.

45' Still even at the half. A wonderful show of football. Ghana with some excellent chances and not afraid to take shots on goal. Germany making excellent runs and sending in several very dangerous crosses but they just havent managed to land on the right side to slot one home just yet. Ghana are looking vulnerable to the counterattack, and if they do send all their numbers forward it might be just the advantage Germany need.

51' Finally a goal. It's Germany that open the scoring. Its Gotze who gets a head to a beautiful cross from Mueller, and Gotze gets a head to the ball, heads it straight down into his knee, but his knee sends it into goal. Not perhaps what he meant to do, but he's on the score sheet regardless.

54' Oh my, the lead doesnt last long. Its a goal for Ghana, that looks almost exactly like the opening goal by Germany. An excellent cross into the box and a beautiful header by Ayew cleanly into the far side netting. And the Ghana supporters making noise now, drowning out the Germans who themselves found energy only a few minutes earlier.

63' And Asamoah Gyan gives Ghana a 2-1 lead. Its a mistake in midfield by the Germans, and Gyan finds himself alone with the ball running in on goal and he slams it into the far side netting. An absolutely brilliant goal off the excellent steal by Muntari.

71' Its Miroslav Klose who comes to the rescue for Germany a minute after coming onto the pitch. That's his 15th career World Cup goal and ties Ronaldo for the most ever. Klose deflects it in with his foot on the far post, and its all level once more.

85' Well Ghana with a few good chances to take the lead, but playing perhaps slightly selfishly now, as a few players have chosen to take blasts at goal when perhaps a cross would have served the team better. Germany with a few good runs into defense, requiring excellent defending and goal keeping. Still some very dangerous looking crosses that Ghana have so far been able to clear, but danger not out of the way just yet.

Final' All over as a draw, and a very exciting and open second half to compliment the tactical brilliance of the first half. Germany will be unhappy with that result. Ghana still with a chance to move on, facing a must win against Portugal and perhaps needing a little help from one of the sides in the Germany USA match. Germany still needing a point in their final match against the USA to gaurantee a spot in the next round.. A great match, but another surprising result that has one of the sides tilted as possible champions being held down by an unsuspected side.

ARGENTINA V IRAN

0' Well if there is any David versus Goliath match in this tournament its today's match. The Argentines still with something to prove in this tournament, but the field is wide open for them as several European teams have been struggling, and if they can find their form in the next few weeks they might find themselves lifting the cup. Iran doing well to garner a point so far, but all odds against them today.

5' Well its Iran with the first good opportunity. A free kick sees an attacker get a head to the ball after finding himself in space, but he can't send it onto goal. Perhaps a small wake-up call for the Argentine defense, and Iran have to convert all their opportunities if they want to have a chance at the spoiler in this one. Argentina with nearly all of the possession thus far though, and they are in nearly full control.

15' Argentina controlling near 80% of possession, and its a constant barrage of attack on Iran's defense, and so far they are closing down spaces well, but you get  the feeling its only a matter of time before the flood gates crack.

35' Well still scoreless, and I think surprisingly so. Iran with one or two small opportunities to catch the Argentine defense napping, but unable to convert. The Iranians defending well enough, but the Argentines really lacking the finishing touch so far, perhaps taking for granted that they would win the  match. They'll have to come up with something. Three good opportunities on free kicks and corners, but no headers on target thus far, although they have been agonizingly close.

42' Well its nearly a goal for Iran off a corner kick, as an Iranian attacker gets a head to the ball and sends it to the near post, and its goes just above the crossbar. What an opportunity. Iran have to be pleased with themselves thus far, holding Argentina at bay, but what an upset it would be if they can manage to convert one of these scant opportunities.

53' Well, an opportunity for Argentina on a beautiful cross but no striker able to get a head to it. Iran then counter excellently with a beautiful run through midfield and then a nice through ball outside. The cross comes in and a beautiful header onto goal requires a brilliant save from the Argentine keeper. And nearly a goal that, and what a wakeup call for Argentina, perhaps what they needed, nearly finding themselves down a goal. A minute later, a long ball is chased down by Iran and perhaps a small controversy as he was tackled harshly and no penalty or even a foul awarded. Might have been from a different referee, and Iran feel robbed of the spot kick there.

64' Chaos in the back for Argentina. Its a corner from a deflected shot for Iran that gets knocked about the penalty box for a long while before finally cleared. Dangerous moments for Argentina, and Iran unlucky to have not found the back of the net yet. Minutes later another near goal for Iran. A Brilliant cross in finds Dejagah in space and he gets a good head onto it requiring a brilliant save from Romero to keep Argentina level. Iran full of confidence, but need to be careful not to get caught on the counter attack.

74' Another good chance for Di Maria of Argentina, as he finds himself with the ball in the box with only the keeper to beat, but he drills it right at the keeper and its a good save to keep Iran level. A Messi free kick going just wide minutes earlier, and Iran have to believe that they might hold on here, but they'll certainly have a flurry of attack to deal with in this final fifteen minutes.

86' Oh my nearly a goal for Iran again. A high line by two Argentine defenders sees a through ball beat them and the runner for Iran gets there first and puts a good shot on goal that requires a brilliant save by the Argentine keeper again to keep them level.

91' Well its heroics from Messi to save the day for Argentina. Iran leaving him with just a little bit too much space at the top of the box, and he curls an absolutely gorgeous shot into the far side of goal to beat the keeper. Messi with another great goal, and Iran will be disappointed at coming so close to a miracle draw.

Final' All Argentine urgency gone after the goal, and the see the rest of stoppage time out slowly, but its the three points they were expecting, but certainly not in the style and dominance that everyone was expecting of them. Iran nearly pulling off the upset, and they might have even deserved to win this one. Luck simply not on their side today, but their performance today, or rather the Argentines' performance against Iran, raising real doubts as to whether this side has what it takes to win the tournament. Argentina will be in the knockout phase, but they'll have to do better than today. Iran still with a chance, but they'll have to beat the Bosnians and hope that Argentina beat the Nigerians.

20 June, 2014

HONDURAS V ECUADOR

0' A Match between two teams losing their openers here, and both sides desperately needing three points to keep any hope alive. The Hondurans have the easier fixture in the final game against the Swiss, who were nearly head to a draw by Ecuador and who were taken apart by the French, and a win by 2 or more goals here would mean the only would need to hold Switzerland to a draw to move on. A win by Ecuador doesn't eliminate the Honduras, and the Ecuadorians might even go through with a win here and a loss to France if Honduras then move on to beat Switzerland. Whatever the situation might turn into, three points undeniably better than going home today with none, and both teams will look to play for the win.

20' Well a very open game thus far, with no strong midfield play by either team. Good opportunities for both, but both teams lacking finishing as well. A wide open game, but somewhat sloppy play from both sides, and it only seems a matter of time before one of them get lucky and strike a goal, but neither team with the kind of form that looks like it might do much harm to either the Swiss or the French. Still time to settle down and string together a few good possessions though, but both teams attacking up the wings in long ball strategy that hardly looks effective or dangerous.

28' Nearly a goal from Honduras off a corner, a man flying in on the far post left unmarked, and gets a good head to the ball that goes just the wrong side of the upright. The keeper was beat, and Honduras left ruing their chance. An excellent set piece nonetheless, but sloppy defending from the Ecuadorians. They'll have to do better.

31' And its the games opening goal, one for Honduras. A beautiful through ball well brought down by Costly who then powers it home past the keeper. An excellent shot and ball and just what the Hondurans needed. Somehow one gets the feeling there are plenty more goals to come in this one though, and 1 goal surely isn't enough to feel safe or to put the Ecuadorians out just yet.

34' Well the lead didnt last long. A shot takes a deflection off the Honduran defenders and trickles towards the far post where Valencia slots it in past the keeper. A good piece of dribbling but a poor shot turns into a brilliant cross and excellent finish. Back to square one here, but both sides will look to take the lead going into the half.

45' Oh its a disallowed goal for Honduras and it was absolutely beautiful header that goes into the crossbar and the rebound sent into goal. Hondurans finding a lot of space on excellent into the box, and very nearly taking the lead before half. They'll be upset at the referee, but it was a good call by the referee and no controversy when you view the replay. A blessing in disguise for Ecuador as perhaps the Hondurans will be thrown off their game by frustration.

58' Nearly a goal for Ecuador, as an excellent run into defense is met with a sliding tackle that just puts the striker off enough to prevent danger but not enough to warrant a penalty. Minutes later nearly a goal for Honduras as a beautiful shot seemingly destined for the bottom right corner is saved brilliantly. Still sloppy midfield play from both teams, and plenty of space to be found in attack, but swarming defenses, offside traps and lack of finishing touch keeping things level for now.

65' Oh there it is, finally a go ahead goal for Ecuador. Its Valencia again on a header from a free kick. He was well marked but the Honduran defender unable to elevate, and the keeper beaten. Ecuador realistically need a win here to have a chance of moving on. A relatively even game though and Honduras not without chances themselves, and always still the possibility for more goals.

84' Oh nearly the equaliser for Honduras. A great cross comes across the face of goal but no one can get to it. Running out of time now, but Honduras knocking on the door. So far Ecuador doing just enough in defense and a bit of luck to keep them out.

Final' All over now, its a pair of goals from Valencia to gift Ecuador three points. Neither team looked up the the class of play required to do much in the knockout rounds though. Never the less, plenty of possibilities left, as a Honduras win against Switzerland by 2 goals and a France win against Ecuador by 2 goals, or a Honduras win by 3 goals and a France win by 1 goal sees Honduras through. Ecuador are through with a draw and either a Honduran draw or win, or they can even get in through a loss and a Honduran win by 2 or fewer goals if they lose by 1 goal, or a Honduran win by 1 goal if they lose by 2 goals. Switzerland of course through with a win and Ecuadorian loss or tie, or a draw and an Ecuadorian loss by two or more goals. However, Neither Ecuador nor Honduras really playing with the kind of form that you would think is going to challenge France, nor even the Swiss.

SWITZERLAND V FRANCE

0' An important game this for both sides, as the winner of the group earns the right to avoid Argentina in the round of 16. Both France and Switzerland looking strong in their openers, and this should prove to be another excellent match. No Central or South American squad to upset the European giants this time, and both teams will look to take the three points and secure their ticket to the next round.

14' The French forcing the Swiss to defend early, with a few shooting opportunities but unable to put anything on goal this far. The Swiss might be okay settling in on defense and springing the occasional counter attack with Shaqiri, but you have to think that with the fire power France has, particularly with Benzema, if you give them enough opportunities they're bound to convert.

17' And its the French who open the scoring with a brilliant goal on a header from a corner kick by Giroud. He makes a late run but gets a good head to it. The Swiss keeper able to get a hand to it and push it wide, but not quite wide enough as it hits the upright and bounces back into goal.
18' A minute later its the French again! 2-0 to France in a matter of seconds. Its a pall given up in midfield by the swiss on a horrible backpass, and Benzema finds Matuidi making a run and he slots it past the keeper on the near side of the post. What a sensation couple of minutes, France making the Swiss pay for their small mistake, and the Swiss have to play with urgency now.

27' Oh a Swiss goal is disallowed for off sides. Its a free kick that comes, but the rebound goes out to a Swiss player who shoots it back in, a deflection then sends the ball on to another Swiss forward who half volleys it in, but from an onside position. The Swiss doing well to put the pressure in attack on the French, and still plenty of time to come back, although they'd like to at least have one before the half.
29' Two minutes later another greate opportunity for the Swiss. A powerful shot from outside the box is saved but the deflection falls to Shaqiri who's shot goes just wide. What an opportunity, but the Swiss certainly looking threatening here.

31' Oh my more disaster for the Swiss, Benzema is clipped in the penalty box and a kick from the spot is awarded. A wonderful save on the thats hit low and to the left, and the rebound gets volleyed into the crossbar by Giroud. France letting Switzerland off the hook there, and will Switzerland capitalize.

40' And its three for France. A horrible half for the Swiss that they would like to forget. Its a brilliant counter attack off a Swiss corner kick that sees Giroud running unmarked down the wing, and sending in a beautiful cross for Valbuena to strike into the back of the net. The Swiss have quite the hole to dig themselves out of, and the French full of confidence now. Minutes later its nearly another for Valbuena, but a beautiful save for the Swiss keeper.

60' Dangerous times for the Swiss and the French create three golden opportunities back to back to back, capitalizing on Swiss inability to clear the ball sufficiently. Three good shots blocked or deflected, and the French haven't completely pulled the pedal off the gas. If anything, it highlight Swiss weaknesses that perhaps Honduras might be able to capitalize on, but the French looking extremely strong in attack, and showing excellent finishing, something we've seen a lot of teams struggle with in this tournament.

64' An excellent opportunity for Mehmedi as he finds himself at the end of a cross unmarked on the far side of the box, yet his first touch not a good one and he's unable to score. He'll regret that wasted oppportunity, and the Swiss need to convert everything they can to come back in this one.

67' Well its Benzema adding his name to the score sheet and its all but over for the Swiss. A good through ball finds Benzema in space, and the Real Madrid striker makes an excellent run and finishes brilliantly, half volleying the ball right through the keepers legs. That'll be good for his confidence, especially after the missed penalty, and the French piling it on here.

72' Oh my its 5 now. A beautiful ball from Benzema at the top of the box finds Sissoko open on the far side, and he slots it into the bottom corner. France just cannot miss today, and this is the best finishing by a side we've seen all tournament. Celebrations all around for France, and the Swiss completely down and out. Not out of the tournament yet, but this is one they'll want to forget and forget in a hurry.

77' France nearly with their sixth! They are finding all kinds of space in the Swiss defense, and a Valbuena shot gets blocked nicely, minutes later a Benzema shot on a rebound gets svaed nicely. This will do will to salvage some confidence for their next match for the Swiss goal keeper.

81' Well the Swiss finally with a bit of good news. They steal one back on a Beautiful free kick by Dzemaili who slots it underneath the wall and right in side the upright. A beautiful free kick, but France wont be too bothered by it. The Swiss at least happy to spoil the French keepers clean sheet, and thats a good confidence builder for them ahead of their match against Honduras.

87' Well another goal for the Swiss, an absolutely beautiful volley past the keeper off a beautiful chipped lob ball for Xhaka, but too little too late for the Swiss. More confidence for their next match though, as that was an absolutely gorgeous goal.

Final' Well, Benzema scoring again but the Final whistle had gone right before he scores an absolutely beautiful goal. It won't affect anything except his campaign for the golden boot. A night to forget for the Swiss, but the French in brilliant form. They've all but punched their ticket into the next round. The Swiss not out yet, they'll have to beat the Hondurans at the least, but they have some major holes in defense to plug first. A beautiful game that, and a brilliant display of top class finishing as the French put on a clinic.

ITALY V COSTA RICA

0' An important game for both sides here, each taking 3 in their opener and neither will want to enter their final group stage match still needing points. English fans with a rooting interest as well, as anything aside from a Costa Rica loss sees them out. The Italians playing very well in their opener, and Costa Rica will have a touch match ahead of them. Buffon back in goal as well for the Italians, and they are one of the few powerhouse teams to live up to expectations thus far, and will aim to continue to do so.

8' Well its nearly an opening goal for Costa Rica off a corner kick. Buffon indecisive and doesnt come out strong enough, but the header not on target. Italy with the majority of possession thus far, but Costa Rica defending well and even looking somewhat threatening on the counter.

25' Costa Rican defense holding steady, and Italy unable to crack them for a good scoring opportunity. A very tame match thus far, with the bulk of play in midfield, where the Italians do have more of the possession, but Costa Rica not giving way yet. No good counter attack opportunities for them either, and this is in start contrast to the flurry of goals we've seen in other games. Both teams defending well.

31' Its nearly a goal for Balotelli, a beautiful through ball in past the high line of the Costa Rican defense. Balotelli tries to chip the keeper but its a poor effort and isn't on target. Nearly a goal, but an excellent run by Balotelli. And a minute later its nearly another for Balotelli. Another run  in past the high line of the defense, and this time he sends in a blast from the top of the box but Navas, the Costa Rican keeper, able to collect the ball. A great save, but its starting to look like the Italians have solved the Costa Rican defense and have their timed runs down.

42' Joel Campbell making a run for Costa Rica and he gets taken down in the box, the referee choosing not to award the penalty kick in somewhat controversial fashion. Some good chances for Costa Rica on two corners, but the only shots on goal have been easily handled, and unlucky a few times for sending a few chances wide.

45' Right before the half its Costa Rica that take the lead! A beautiful cross finds Ruiz in space on the far post, and he beats Buffon with a header into the cross bar. The ball bounces on the ground and comes back out, a la England v Germany from four years ago, but Goalline technology coming to the rescue in this tournament, and the goal correctly given. Costa Rica will feel that is just for the disallowed penalty, and Italy will need to come out in the second half with some urgency.

53' Italy testing the Costa Rican keeper. A good free kick by Pirlo and a powerful shot from outside the box by de Rossi saved well. Italy coming on strong though, and still plenty of time left, but the Costa Rican defense doing an excellent job of maintaining a high line and the offside trap seems to be working thus far.

76' Italy unable to crack the Costa Rican defense, and they are holding good form as the Italians begin to play with a little frustration. The high line of Costa Rica shrinking play to a small portion of the midfield, and Italy unable to find space with everyone so bunched up. Uruguay will be cheering on Costa Rica for a second goal, as that would mean they only need a tie against Italy to move on.

Final' Well its hard to believe, the Italians have fallen to Costa Rica, and for the first time in their history Costa Rica will be going through to the knockout round, and from a group of no less than 3 footballing giants. Italy won't be too bothered by it, a draw in their final match sees them through as well. But unable to crack the tough Costa Rican defense today. Costa Rica doing a phenomenal job stymieing the Italian attack. Phenomenal play, and one can only think that the hex against European teams in World Cups hosted in the americas is a very real thing. A wonderful match, and nothing to do but congratulate the Costa Ricans. If they continue to play like this, they will be tough to score against.

JAPAN V GREECE

0' Match Day Two in Group C, and both teams needing points after losing their opening fixture. Japan looked the stronger in their opener, but paid heavily for momentary lapses in defense. The greek attack looking strong, but lacking the finishing touch needed to score goals as well. Both managers making changes to the starting lineup, hoping to find that perfect formula, and this should prove to be another good one.

12' The first card of the game to the Japanese captain Hasebe, for a really rather meager foul. The Greeks looking very strong on the counter attack, but generally content sitting back in defense and letting Japan try their luck. The Japanese making a few good runs in attack, and getting shots on goal, but nothing too troubling for the Greek keeper yet.

24' The pace of the game slowing down a bit. Greece still sitting back and defending, and sending the occasional counter attack forward. Japan being more deliberate with their possession, probing for the open man in space. Still getting shots on goal, and the Greeks need to shore up their defense slightly. Slight controversy already with the refereeing, as he might appear to slightly favor Japan, awarding fouls for very minor offenses. No major game changing calls yet, but you hate to see the referee have an effect on the match.

29' Japan nearly go up on a beautiful free kick from the edge of the box that tests the keeper. Unable to collect it clearly and getting lucky with the rebound, but a well struck free kick and a good save.

38' Oh my its a second yellow for the Greek Captain Katsouranis and Greece are down to ten men. It wasn't a particularly strong tackle, and perhaps a bit of controversy there. Greece playing well on the counter finding holes in the Japanese defense and midfield, and we'll see how this affects their strategy. Japan not without chances, and sending shots on goal, but unable to muster anything that would beat the keeper.

45' At the end of the half, Greece not down and out yet, as they are well coped to sit and defend and pounce on the counter. Japan playing well but lacking finishing power. Expecting more of the same in the second half, and both teams will need to find that magical touch that has eluded them thus far if they want to steal three points and live to fight another day.

60' Greece nearly going ahead despite being a man down on a header from a corner kick by Gekas. A wonderful save by the keeper. Greece still defending well, and Japan still lacking that magical touch in the final third. A draw not the end of the world for Greece, but it would send Japan out.

68' Oh my its nearly a goal for Japan, a beautiful long ball catches a run in behind defense, the cross across the face of goal and the attacking forward who is in on the far post sends it flying. What a chance, and Greece lucky Japan did not capitalize on their mistake. Still lacking that goal scoring instinct is Japan, despite plenty of opportunity. Minutes later another brilliant chance for Japan as Greece do not clear the ball well and let the ball come on to Japanese attacker.

80' And Samaras nearly delivering for Greece on a corner kick. He comes in on goal and has a bit of space as he connects with the ball, and he should have done better, at least sending it on target. Japan still playing well in midfield, and finding some threatening positions from which they're sending in dangerous crosses, but Greece holding firm and Japan still searching for the back of the net.

Final' All over here. Greece doing well to not lose the match, and keep their hopes alive. Japan have to be disappointed, and they had all kinds of chances, but simply couldn't finish. Greece doing well to defend, but unable to find goals themselves. They'll have to break that trend and at least score a few in their last match if they hope to advance. The real winners today are Colombia, who have now guaranteed their spot in the next round. Poor play, but you hope from for better, and still one last opportunity for both teams to showcase their talents.

URUGUAY V ENGLAND

0' Match day 2 in Group D, and both teams here looking to avoid the early trip home. An absolute must win for both teams. Luis Suarez suiting up for Uruguay, and we'll see how fit he is coming in off the knee surgery. Captain Diego Lugano out on an injury though, and we'll see what effect that has on the Uruguayan defense. Forlan on the bench to start, and Maxi Pereira out on suspension. England with the same starting XI as their match against Italy. England played the stronger opening match, and looked very strong in attack. Uruguay not lacking attacking ability themselves, and this should prove to be another absolutely top class match.

9' A yellow for a hand ball for Godin at the edge of the box for a hand ball on a pass that seemed destined for Rooney in on net. Rooney nearly converts the free kick and its just inches away from the top corner. England coming out very strong, forcing Uruguay to defend early. Uruguay with a few chances on the counter-attack, but England able to cope thus far.

15' Rodriguez finds himself in space with the ball in the box for Uruguay after a stray deflection off a cross, and he has time to set up his shot and shoots a blast that goes inches above the cross bar. What an opportunity that, and what a shot. With that pace and from that distance, any shot on goal would have beaten Joe Hart.

30' A somewhat controversial call in the Godin might have deserved a second yellow for a hard foul that brought an English attack to a full stop. The referee choosing only to award the free kick. Even play thus far in the half, with each side moving the ball well into their attacking halves. Some excellent runs by the Uruguayans in the last few minutes. But its nearly an opening goal for Rooney on a header from a Gerrard free kick. Rooney is in on the far post and from point blank range manages to hit the cross bar. Thats unlucky for Rooney and England.

39' Luis Suarez strikes first for Uruguay, and all questions about his fitness have just vanished. His first game back from surgery and he scores a beautiful header after finding himself in space and at the end of a short cross from Cavani, and Uruguay would do well to keep the pressure on England. Nearly an equaliser for Sturridge a minute later, but Muslera covers his near post well.

52' Uruguay nearly scoring a second a few times. A tricky corner from Suarez nearly goes in on its own, and then a beautiful through pass sees Cavani in on goal and he sends it around Joe Hart but also around the goal. Uruguay coming out strong in this half, having England on their heels, and unfortunate to have not secured a two goal cushion.

54' Nearly the equaliser from Rooney, again he finds himself with the ball right in front of goal, and Muslera makes a phenomenal save, although Rooney shooting the ball right at him. Anywhere else and thats a sure goal. Rooney has to be wondering if the curse is real, still searching for his first goal in 10 World cup matches.

72' England pressing forward but Uruguay killing time each opportunity they get. There might be a minor controversy in the referee being slightly more generous in calling fouls against the English, but Uruguay defending well here. Still time for England, but they're finding themselves bunched up in the attack.

75' England finally equalise. Its Rooney who finally scores on the world's biggest stage. Its a beautiful run on the counter attack and a cross through the legs of an Uruguayan defender and Rooney sneaks in on the back post. All level here, and the goal breathes life back into the English fans and players. A draw not much help to either team, particularly the Uruguayans who next face Italy, and I expect both teams will seek to steal all three points in what time is left.

85' And Suarez saving Uruguay again! What a sensational goal for a man who many thought might not even be fit to play. Its a long drop kick from Muslera thats headed on by accidentally by Gerrard and lands in front of Suarez who is in on goal unmarked. Absolutely phenomenal, and England forced to dig deep again.

Final' Luis Suarez a hero once more, and this time for all the right reasons. England not out, but they'll need a lot of help from Italy to win out and will have to take care of Costa Rica themselves. Two critical mistakes on defense that Suarez makes them pay. The Uruguayans should have scored more though, and they were exposed from time to time on defense. England not without chances themselves, and will need to find the back of the net. Perhaps too late for them though as they sit without points after two matches. A brilliant and exciting back and forth game.

COLOMBIA V IVORY COAST

0' An excellent matchup for the spoils of Group C today. Colombia coming off of a strong win against Greece, where they looked very strong on the counter attack and defended well. Ivory Coast with second half heroics to come from behind and steal three points from Japan. Didier Drogba having a massive effect on their attack efficiency, but starting again on the bench. Colombia with the stronger opening performance, but this should prove to be an excellent match. Another three points at stake, and with it a virtual guarantee of going through to the next round, and both teams looking to make good on their talent and reverse their recent histories of squalor in world cups. Colombian fans out in strength today, and that will go a long way to making the team feel at home.

6' Nearly an early goal for Colombia as a long ball finds its way to Gutierrez in space but he is unable to get a shot on goal. A very open match so far, and neither team looks very settled. No strong midfield play either, with both teams playing long ball for the moment. Colombia making the better runs in attack though, but just lacking that magical finishing touch so far.

16' Colombia starting to exert dominance, and they have control of the match. Excellent running into space, and some excellent crosses that just cant seem to find anyone on the end as of yet. Ivory Coast with a few opportunities on the counter, but being forced to defend here. You just wonder how long they can hold out before the inevitable Drogba substitution helps them in the attack.

40' Ivory Coast defending well, but a few shaky possessions in defense that almost looked as if they were about to give the ball away. Colombia still maintaining pressure, and defending the counter well when required. They'll want to find their finishing touch to get ahead. Luckily for them, Ivory Coast still haven't found their attacking touch either.

45' And right before the half Ivory Coast turn it own and create some excellent opportunities for themselves, but unable to convert. The ball floating across goal more than once yet no one on the end of them. A very exciting scoreless half, but the story more missed chances than excellent defending or goal keeping. Both sides will look for inspiration at the half as they both feel like a goal and the win is only inches away.

55' Both sides come out of the half strong on the attack, and trade dangerous free kicks. Still lacking that final touch, but both defenses looking shaky, and giving up plenty of space for the opposing attack. Dangerous minutes we're seeing, and it almost feels that as soon as one goal comes it will be a barrage that follow.

59' Well Cameroon coming the closest thus far, its a shot from a steep angle that the keeper gets a hand to but the ball proceeds to rattles off the post. Absolute chaos at both ends of the field. And Drogba finally comes on for Bony, and that might be the little bit of magic the Ivory Coast need.

64' Its Colombia who finally break the scoring. Its a beautiful header off of a corner kick. And they finally break through. It's been a long time coming and the fans in the stadium erupt. Rodriguez comes near side, and slips Drogba who is marking him. The goal keeper gets a hand to it but its not enough as its headed with good pace. A fantastic goal, and the pressure squarely on Ivory Coast now to come up with one themselves. Still plenty of time left.

70' Ivory Coast threatening with plenty of good chances and a few free kicks and corners as well, but unable to convert, and its Colombia who comes back across the pitch, stealing the ball in defense, and in a 4 on 3 a beautiful pass in to Quintero to beat the central defender, and its easily sent past the keeper for the second goal and some security for Colombia. A horrible mistake in defense by Ivory Coast and Colombia makes them pay. They'll have to find some magic now, not unlike their two quick goals in succession against Japan.

73' A piece of inspired football from Gervinho brings the Ivory Coast back within one. He makes an excellent run through and around three Colombian defenders to find space in front of goal and sends a powerful shot near post past the keeper. What a goal, and sheer will from Gervinho to put Ivory Coast on the score sheet. They're not out of it yet.

81' Ivory Coast so close to equalising, with several good opportunities. They're attacking very well, and the Colombian defense looks less than secure. That being said, Colombia still looking dangerous on the occasional counter, but no risk no reward here for Ivory Coast. The Colombians also milking the clock every opportunity they can get, and thats something weve seen from all of the Central and South American countries so far, an amazing inclination to kill time in a frankly unsportsmanlike manner.

Final' Well Colombia on the doorstep of advancing to the knockout round for the first time ever. A good came against the Ivory Coast. The Ivory Coast should have had more goals, but just lacking that little bit of finishing touch. You have to wonder what difference Drogba might have made if he was in the entire match. Some holes to fix on defense for the Ivory Coast, as well as Colombia, if they want to make it far in the knock out round.

CROATIA V CAMEROON

0' The draw by Brasil and Mexico leave this a must win for both teams. A draw doesn't eliminate them mathematically but makes the path on to the knockout round significantly harder. Cameroon will need to find an attack in this game, and Croatia will look to keep the pace and energy they started their tournament with, but with a better result this time around. Should be a good match this, and Croatia have to be the favorites this time. Joga Bonito.

11' And Croatia strikes first. Its a beautiful bit of passing, a deflection off a cross in gets tapped to an open Olic who taps it on as he had gotten in behind his man, for a beautiful goal. Cameroon coming out strong, dominating the first ten minutes, but to no avail, and they will look to keep the pressure on only now with a sense of urgency.

18' Croatia nearly making it too as a deflection off a corner comes in and Mandzukic unmarked hits it into the keeper. A good save and excellent positioning by the Cameroon keeper, but Cameroon definitely on their heels.

33' Croatia look very much in control, and with the more threatening attacks. Croatia with a chance here and there, but unable to finish off their chances, instead sending errant passes or placing ill timed shots. And when they do go forward they look very vulnerable on the counterattack.

40' Oh my its a red card for Alex Song on a foul away from the ball. Its a straight red for a small punch, that looked like he was hacking with an axe, in the back. The referee saw it all, and Cameroon at ever more of a disadvantage now. An uncalled for foul, and the rest of Song's teammates must be wondering just why he felt possessed to do that.

45' A beautiful piece of football right before the half by Cameroon, a one-man show that sends the ball over the crossbar, but brings the Cameroon crowd back into the match. Cameroon will have to come up with something special in the second half, especially down a man, but still playing with heart.

48' A poor clear by Cameroon and a solo effort by Perisic sees him beat the keeper to the near side, and that gives Croatia the 2-0 lead. That might be enough to put a nail in the coffin for Cameroon, as the Croatians capitalizing well on the mistake in defense. A minute later its nearly another for the Croatians as Mandzukic gets the ball in on goal but sends it just wide of the uprights.

61' Croatia finally crack through once more. Its Mandzukic with a header off a corner that sees them up. Very poor marking by the Cameroon defense, but Mandzukic does well with the space he's given. All but over now for Cameroon, While Croatia will look to continue to build momentum for their do or die match against Mexico.

67' Cameroon with a few good chances here as Croatia take the pedal off the gas slightly, but unable to find that finishing touch to put shots on goal. The crowd fully behind Cameroon, cheering in strength as if it were Brasil on the pitch. And you'd love to see Cameroon steal one back here for themselves, the crowd, and the beautiful game.

73' Mandzukic with another, as he's in just the right spot to collect a rebound off a save from the Cameroon keeper. No defenders near him, and he has all day to slot it home. The Cameroon keeper has to be looking at his defense wondering what they're up to, but its more misery for Cameroon. No doubt now that Croatia will win here, but the crowd still earging on Cameroon for that goal, and now they're playing for pride.

85' Oh my its nearly a goal for Cameroon. A beautiful run in through the Croatian defense, and a layoff pass to a striker who just pushes it wide. He should have done better from there, at least putting it on target. Cameroon playing with real heart though, not giving up yet. Still making excellent runs in attack and defending well. And you have to hope for them to net one before the final whistle.

88' Nearly a fifth for Croatia on the counterattack off a corner. Rakitic receives the ball in on goal and tips it up over the keeper, only to see it go the wrong side of the upright. On the opposite end, a beautiful cross in sees a phenomenal header on goal that beats the keeper but it hits the crossbar and comes back out.

Final' Well its all over. Cameroon out of the tournament. Croatia playing well, but still needing points to move forward. Cameroon unlucky not to score a goal, but a well deserved win for Croatia, even amidst the disarray from the Cameroon side. Eto'o out today, and we can only hope to see him play against Brasil in what is likely his last world cup.

SPAIN V CHILE

0' Nearly set now as the world watches how the reigning champions will react to their 5-1 drubbing to open the tournament. Spain uncharacteristically on the wrong side of the score sheet, with Casillas looking nothing like his former self, and they are in nothing less than a must-win situation. Chile already on three points, looking to steal a point here against Spain, which would put them in good position to escape the group. Australia exposing holes in Chile's defense in the opener, and you have to think that Spain will only further expose them. Should be a good match. Joga Bonito!

1' Oh my its nearly a goal for Chile, as Vidal has some dangerous possession in the box, and a deflection nearly finds its way past Casillas. Off the corner, a header off a deflection sails just wide of the post, and what a nightmare start that would have been. Spain still looking nervous, and they'll need to settle their nerves and quickly, as Chile have come out very strong on the attack.

15' Spain settling down some, nearly putting in a goal from point black range, but the keeper does well to get in front of the ball. Tense moments, but Spain have taken charge of the match and are attacking strongly. They seem very anxious to get up a goal, and are playing a lot more up tempo than usual.

20' Well the nightmare continues for Spain, as Chile goes up 1-0. Spain giving away possession in midfield ending in a beautiful through pass into the box which is touched onto Vargas who brings it around Casillas and sends it home before Sergio Ramos can come in to defend. Spain in real trouble now.

35' Chile doing well to keep Spain from retaining possession for long stretches, and Spain unable to get on track thus far. You have to wonder what kind of half time talk Del Bosque will have for his side if they can't find an equalizer before the half.

43' A free kick for Chile gets punched by Casillas right to a Chilean striker who sends it back and past Casillas this time. Another poor decision by Casillas, but its 2-0 Chile, and Spain need to dig deep and find resolve at the half, and who one can hardly believe it. And a normally quiet and calm del Bosque is up and about on the bench with clear agitation and frustration on his face.

48' Diego Costa with a chance to give Spain a goal on a beautiful ball in from Iniesta, and he takes one too many touches. What a wasted opportunity, and Spain coming out strong but still looking rattled and unnerved, something they're certainly not used to.

53' Another brilliant opportunity for Spain, a free kick gets deflected, and a bicycle kick sends it back in to an open Busquets, who somehow is unable to find goal. What a chance that, and Spain need to start converting these chances.

68' Oh my nearly a third for Chile on the counter attack as Vidal connects with a cross and he's in on goal, but sends it sailing over the cross bar. Spain playing with real urgency, but still lacking that little magic touch we're so used to seeing them with. Chile simply killing time, feigning injuries and taking their time with possession, doing anything to try to slow Spain down.

75' Chilean players taking to ground with any excuse they can find, even if its tripping over themselves. Never like to see that. Spain looking completely exasperated and simply out of ideas. Still time though, and we've seen plenty of examples of quick succession of goals in this tournament. Chile defending well though, and they deserve a lot of credit.

80' Cazorla fresh off the bench gets a good shot in for spain, and the keeper gets a hand to it pushing it wide. And no one is having discussions whether this Spain team is the best ever, instead talking about the end of an era. The Chilean keeper killing time by staying on the ground, untouched by a spanish player, and he's able to kill two minutes this way. You hate to see any team go out because of this kind of unsportsmanlike time wasting.

91' A great opportunity for Sergio Ramos off a corner but its blocked out. Spain still searching for answers, and its bewilderment thats on the faces of everyone rooting for Spain.

Final' Well who can believe it but Spain are out of the tournament with one match day still unplayed. Chile converting their opportunities, and Spain left with no magic. Uncharacteristically giving up possession, and with more mistakes in goal and by defense, unable to finish any opportunities, and when things go wrong everything goes wrong. Everyone spanish looking around trying to figure out what happened, when everything looked so promising just one week ago. Chile and the Dutch are through, and will play it out for the rights to avoid Brasil in the next round. Clearly a generation is over, and a magnificent spell at the top of the world comes for a Spanish team that dominated everyone for the past 5-6 years. There are few teams that get remembered, the Magnificent Magyars of the 50's, the Dutch in the 70's and their total football, and now Spain, but their time is now over, and one can only be left with joy of having seen something special these last few years and with excitement for a new wave and new style of football to come. Viva Espana, and Joga Bonito por sempre.

AUSTRALIA V HOLLAND

0' All set for more Group B action, as Australia take on the Netherlands. The Dutch full of confidence after their thrashing of Spain, and Australia won't scare them. Australia stealing a point would be a massive upset, and you hope for some good football from both sides. However, the Australian defense showing plenty of weaknesses in their opener, and the Dutch offense making Spain look silly, have to bet on the Dutch in this one.

15' Well a third of the way through the first half and its Australia with the better chances thus far. Their attacks finding space, and you'd love to see them convert. It can only be a matter of time before the sleeping giants wake up and Australia are in trouble.

20' Robben opens the scoring for the Dutch. A beautiful counter attack that had the Dutch 3 on 1, and he beats the keeper with a beautiful run from midfield and a shot across the goal into the bottom right corner.
21' A minute later Cahill breathes life back into the Aussies, and no one was expecting that. A beautiful goal taken on the volley from a long cross that he hits with his left foot right into the underside of the cross bar. And that can only be described as one of the goals of the tournament thus far, and Australia still full of confidence after the exchange of goals. What a brilliant couple of minutes.

31' And Bresciano nearly makes it 2-1 Australia, coming in on goal to a pass floated across, and he sends it rocketing over the cross bar. Australia playing very well, with plenty of opportunity. They'll need to be careful of the counterattack, but they're putting the pressure on the Dutch, and I don't think anyone predicted this kind of half. A minute later and another good opportunity for Australia on a free kick, as the Dutch defender loses his man but the Australian striker unable to put enough on the ball to trouble the keeper. One has to wonder when the Dutch will pick their moment, as they seem to be coasting right now inviting danger from the Australians, who look like they might even take the lead going into the half if the Dutch keep playing the way they are.

43' And Cahill earns a yellow, having previously earned one in the opener, he will miss Australia's next match, and barring the unforeseen, this will be the last world cup match in his career. Hate to see that, but all you can hope for is an excellent second half from him to make up for it.

54' Oh my its Australia 2-1, a penalty given for a hand ball in the box, and one can hardly believe it. The Dutch stunned right now, but you have to think that this will only serve as a wake-up call, and Australia will have quite a test for the next 35 minutes. What a sensational start to the half.

58' Well the Dutch finally waking up, its a van Persie goal that brings things equal. He sneaks in past the defense, and is kept onside from the wing back on the opposite side. That almost looked too easy, and you have to wonder what the Dutch are waiting for, giving Australia the light of day here.

67' Nearly a third for the Australians, as the Dutch give the ball away. It's three on one in front of an open goal, and they can't convert. A minute later on the opposite side, a shot from way outside the box finds its way in for the Dutch, and they have the lead once more. Poor defending that, giving up too much space, and poor positioning from the keeper.

80' The pace slowing down some, but Australia still controlling the flow of the game, with plenty of opportunities in offense. The dutch seem content sitting back and launching the occasional counter attack. The Aussies starting to look a bit tired though, with the dutch showing no signs of fatigue themselves.

Final' Well at the end of the day the Dutch walk away with three points, and although they never looked challenged, the Australians played admirably, and put on one of the best performances thus far playing with their hearts in an all out effort. What an effort, but up against a giant just too big to be slain today. The dutch virtually assured of going through now, with the Australians now nearly assured of going home early. What a tournament thus far for the Australians, playing excellent attacking football, but their defense still weak. A good match this, full of the spirit of soccer  that you always want to see. Joga Bonito Australia, Joga por sempre.

RUSSIA V SOUTH KOREA

0' Nearly set for the last of the opening games, as Russia look to move past the group stage for the first time in their short history, in only their third world cup since the break up of the USSR and their joint football squad. Both of these teams are perhaps slightly underrated here in Brasil, and both full of confidence, but Russia have to be the favorites. Should be a good game this, and we all hope for nothing less. Joga Bonito.

20' Well not many chances for either team thus far. Korea playing good possession ball, but no really strong attacks, albeit defending well. Russia feeding the ball up nicely, and finding good space, but unable to finish. But both teams lacking the creative spark in on goal thus far.

35' Both teams alternating possession, and each with a couple of chances, the closest being a deflection off a shot for Korea that whirls just past the wrong side of the upright. The game opening up a bit, and both teams playing strong on the counter attack, but still lacking that finishing touch.

50' Both teams coming out attacking in this second half, after a very defensive contest in the first half. The pace has really picked up, and neither keeper able to hold onto the ball well, creating a lot of deflections that luckily for them have not been tapped in.

68' Finally a goal comes, but its a horrible mistake from the Russian keeper, as a powerful shot from Korea from well outside the box is not handled well at all, and its really a mistake by the keeper that gifts Korea the lead.

74' Fresh off the bench, Kerzhakov knocks a ball home after it was rebounded around in front of goal a couple of times, and just like that its back to square one.

Final' Russia strong on the attack after their goal, but unable to steal a win. An entertaining final 20 minutes, but both teams will have to do better on the attack to find goals moving forward. Only the second draw of the opening round of the group stages, and both teams still in the hunt for moving through the group.

BRASIL V MEXICO

0' Match Day 2 in Group A, and its a battle for first place and as close as a guarantee one can give without certainty of going through to the next round. Mexico looked strong in their opener, but their defense was only rarely tested. Brasil looked unprepared in their opener, but started to find their stride towards the end of the match. Contrasting styles of play here as well, and the atmosphere is sure not to disappoint. Mexico will need to take the crowd out of the match, and an early goal will surely help that.

10' Fred nearly putting Brasil ahead on a beautiful pass by Oscar, but it his the side netting, this time. Both teams coming out very strong, and its a very physical match thus far. The referee letting the two teams play it out, and its been very chaotic in midfield thus far.

20' Some beautiful footwork by Neymar amidst some very physical and strong tackles, more than a few of which I'm sure would have drawn yellow cards from other referees. Mexico defending well, and it will either take a piece of brilliance or a mistake in defense for Brasil to score. Mexico on the other hand not threatening the Brasilian defense in the least.

24' Finally Julio Cesar is called to work, a strong shot that goes just above the cross bar. A good shot from Mexico, and Mexico with a bit of possession in Brasil's half finally. A minute later on the opposite end of the field, an absolutely brilliant save by the Mexico goalkeeper to rob Neymar of a goal.

36' Mexico settling in a little bit, stringing together a few good possessions, taking the pressure off their defense, but the game starting to open up again, with both teams' counter-attacks showing some potential.

42' A Beautiful shot by Mexico goes just wide of the up right, but it looks to have beaten Julio Cesar. Threatening moments from Mexico, who have turned it on here in the latter parts of the first half.

44' A free kick from Brasil goes stray off a deflection into the box with three brasilian players and no Mexican defenders. Another beautiful save from the Mexican keeper Ochoa keeps it level. Not moments later the first yellow comes out, for a hard tackle given by Ramires. Certainly not any stronger than some tackles we have already seen, but the referee drawing the line, and Mexico with a threatening free kick that turns into nothing.

48' A beautiful opportunity for Brasil from a through ball that gets a cross in across an open goal, only to be headed away by a Mexican defender who chases down the ball before Neymar can get a head to it. Brasil have come out with pace and determination in this second half, and it looks like Mexico will have to settle into defense for a little while before creating their own chances, just like in the first half.

57' Mexico now with some good possession, threatening Julio Cesar twice with some excellent powerful shots from just outside the box. Brasil in momentary disarray, and this is the time if there ever is one for Mexico to score. One wonders how long this window will stay open, and you know Brasil has the talent to collect themselves and find goal if they need to.

69' Brasil again nearly takes the lead, after Neymar finds himself with the ball in front of the goal. Another beautiful save by Ochoa keeps it level, and he is having a match for the ages so far. Brasil looking very threatening, but Mexico defending well. Against this Brasil side though, they'll have to do more than that. A strong counter attack and taking away a bit of possession will go a long way to keeping Brasil at bay. Brasil finding a lot of space in midfield, and sending in cross after cross.

75' The game opening up again. Some excellent runs by Chicarito for the Mexicans and Jo for the Brasilians, both fresh off the bench, sees two good chances. Both teams seeking the full 3 points.

86' A free kick for Brasil sees Thiago Silva in unmarked, but his header goes straight at Ochoa, who comes up with another miracle save to keep his sheet clean. He is keeping Mexico in the game by sheer personal determination.

Final' Well it all ends in a draw. Julio Cesar stopping a pair of good shots near the end of the match, reminding everyone that there were two keepers on the pitch today. But it was Guillermo Ochoa who's the star of the match, with an absolutely stellar performance on the worlds biggest stage against possible the biggest giant there is. A well earned draw for Mexico, and both teams still left with hunger for their final group stage matches.

ARGENTINA V BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

0' Opening day in Group F today, as the heavy favorites Argentina open their competition against Bosnia, who are in their first world cup finals ever. They won their qualification group, and are favored to also come out of the group with Argentina. Argentina with a history of underperforming in World Cups in the last 20 years, and they'll look to correct that this year, on the backs of the young captain Messi.

3' Oh no its a disaster start for Bosnia in their World Cup Finals History. An Argentine freekick gets headed into a Bosnia defender and knocked into goal. The header itself not a good one and destined to go wide, and Bosnia now having to climb out of a whole. Dream start for Argentina, who must feel that luck finally on their side.

13' Its a brilliant opportunity for Bosnia, a brilliant through ball and brought down well, but the keeper coming out well and just getting in front of the shot. Bosnia playing very well, and Argentina having much lower level of controls in this game than perhaps they would prefer. Bosnia defending very well, and pouncing quickly on the counter attack in quite frankly a very threatening and dangerous manner.

31' Bosnia looking the more threatening side so far in this half, playing excellently on all sides of the ball. Perhaps a bit of a slow start for Argentina, not withhout chances, and playing well themselves, but expectations are high, and they'll have to improve if they are going to make the kind of run to the finals so many expect them to.

45' Well Bosnia are unlucky to find themselves down at the half, playing excellently, and at least as well as Argentina to open. Messi showing some moments of brilliance dribbling the ball out of midfield, but not with sufficient support for the give and go or for laying it off for a shot. Bosnia will hope to convert more of their chances on offense, as they need goals now to come back. Although Bosnia impressing, it has to be said that Argentina not living up to expectations yet.

65' Finally a breakthrough for Argentina and Messi. Its a brilliant goal, and wonderful dribbling out of midfield before slotting it past the keeper into the upright and back into the net. Its classic Messi, but the first time we're seeing in on the world  cup stage.

84' Well its one back for Bosnia and its well deserved. Its a nice through ball into defense and a nice touch to beat the keeper. Bosnia not out of it yet and they've been playing well. Still time to find the equaliser.

Final' Well its Argentina walking away with the three points today, but in less dominant fashion that we might have thought. Bosnia not a bad team though, and we'll still expect them to go through to the knockout phase. Messi finally scoring a world cup goal though, and you almost get the feeling that this is the beginning of something great from him, as he finally does for Argentina what he's done so many times for Barcelona.

SWITZERLAND V ECUADOR

0' Opening day in Group E, and its a plucky Ecuadorian side who are the underdogs against the young up and coming Swiss side. We've seen the South and Central American teals doing well here, and the European teams being a bit disappointing for the most part, and perhaps Ecuador can pull a surprise, but its the Swiss who are the favorites and strong ones at that.

15' Both teams coming on slightly nervously. Good back and forth play, a few opportunities but nothing seriously threatening thus far. Neither team able to string together very long possessions, with good midfield defending by both teams. A good shot by Shaqiri, and he's playing well, but not enough to beat the keeper yet.

22' Oh my its the opening goal to Ecuador. A header from a free kick that bounces infront and then above the Swiss keeper. Ecuador would do well to keep the pressure on, as this Swiss do have scoring ability in Seferevic and Shaqiri.

35' Ecuador playing well, and not allowing Switzerland to maintain possession for long stretches and develop play. The Swiss able to make a few runs in on the counter attack  into space, but Ecuador closing gaps quickly. The Swiss playing slightly impatiently, sending in several shots from very far out, that won't beat the keeper 99 times out of 100, which is allowing Ecuador to counter attack themselves. Ecuador lacking finishing touch though on everything since their goal.

45' Switzerland thankful for the break at the half, not defending cleanly at all. Giving up the ball a bit too easily to Ecuador and sloppy play in the back. Ecuador unable to make the pay, and you have to think Switzerland will be able to collect themselves at the half. Still looking strong in the attack though, and both teams with chances, but the Swiss with the better looking of them, or at least, with the better finishing, but still not good enough to earn goals.

48' Well the half time break all Switzerland needed. They've come out strong and finally earn the equalizer. Its a good goal off of a corner. Mehmedi sitting in front of the keeper with a man on him the entire time, but simply rising up and reaching the ball first. Very poor defending on the set piece by Ecuador, but a well earned goal, and Switzerland now full of confidence and energy to try and take all three points from the contest.

60' Nearly the go ahead goal for Ecuador, who are testing the Swiss with their counter attacking. The Swiss looking good in the attacking third, but very shaky in midfield and in defense, which is unexpected against this Ecuadorian side. Perhaps Ecuador stronger in the attack than expected, but Switzerland will do will to sort themselves out before their next match against France.

70' A swiss goal disallowed for offside, but the Swiss attacking well out of midfield now, with several fast break opportunities, but just their finishing just slightly off, sending balls into the side netting and up over the cross bar. You have the feeling that if they can just get the shot on goal they'll be able to draw the equaliser.

73' A wonderful opportunity for Ecuador as the Swiss keeper comes out of the box but isn't able to clear the ball cleanly. The Ecuadorian striker gets a touch on but not enough to send it into goal and the Swiss defense cleans up nicely. Tense moments here as both teams seek the go ahead goal.

Final' Its nearly the game winner for Ecuador, as a forward finds himself with the ball in space. Well tackled out by the Swiss defense, and they counter and score the game winner themselves! What a sensational goal. Poor defense and marking by the Ecuadorian, and Seferevic makes an absolutely excellent run to the near post and slots it home. The final whistle goes right after the celebrations are over, and a stunner here. Switzerland escaping with three points, but they'll have to do better than they did today against France. A disappoint for Ecuador who played well, but they werent able to finish their chances today.

IVORY COAST V JAPAN

0' Important game for both teams here in an absolutely wide open group. No Didier Drogba in the starting line-up for Ivory Coast, but they'll fancy their chances without him. Japan the clear underdogs, but certainly not pushovers, with a very industrious side and experience in Honda and Hasebe. 3 points will do well to helping each of these teams into the knockout phase.

16' And its Japan who score first. Both teams coming out somewhat haphazardly. Both with chances. Ivory Coast with the best of them, but Japan the first to convert. Its from a short corner and Honda gets the ball at the top of the box and just rifles the ball into the top near side corner. A Brilliant shot, and Japan have Ivory Coast in trouble.

21' Japan nearly take a second, and Ivory Coast in disarray. Japan finding lots of space in the attack, and controlling the bull-worth of possession.

34' Free kick opportunities for Ivory Coast, but unable to convert. They taken back some bit of control of the came from Japan, but Japan still playing strong and keeping up the pressure. Wonderful attacking game from both sides. Yaya Toure with two good free kicks, but both just missing their mark. A good shot as well by Boka and an excellent save by the Japanese keeper to keep things level. Both sides threatening to score, with good attempts.

47' Ivory Coast nearly giving up a goal. A bad turnover in their defending half but Japan cannot make them pay. Minute later on the opposite side they nearly draw even, its a header by Toure that goes wide. Ivory Coast have not come out well, and need to control the ball better. Japan not yet making them pay for their mistakes though.

58' Ivory Coast now with the majority of possession but unable to convert, and its a tale of missed opportunities for both teams here. Drogba warming up on the bench, and you wonder if he'll be able to interject some finishing on the end of these wonderful opportunities.

64' Its Ivory Coast who equalises and Drogba has an immediate impact. In the 4 minutes he's been in he's created 3 chances and the fourth attack converts. Its Bony who gets his head to a cross and sends it into the far side netting. Excellent header, and Ivory Coast are right back in this. Japan ruing their early chances, and not making Ivory Coast pay for their mistakes. All level now, and the edge has clearly shifted to the Africans.

66' Oh my a minute later its another one for Ivory Coast. Its Gervinho who connects his head with a cross this time, and this time sends it to the near post. Japan in total disarray, Gervinho with all kinds of space and the keeper in poor positioning. What a change of events here, and Japan now on their heels. A magical effect Drogba has had, and the African fans with new life and energy, as well as the players.

81' Ivory Coast maintaining good possessions and attacking well, and Japan certainly not controlling the game like a team down a goal would like to. Drogba nearly makes it three on a beautiful free kick 30 years out, but its a great save by the Japanese keeper to give his team a fighting chance.

Final' Well a beautiful comeback for Ivory Coast hands them three points and a good chance to escape the group. Japan playing well but just lacking the finishing touch needed to score goals. Big mistakes in defense as well, and they have a lot to fix if they want to make any kind of run in this tournament.

ENGLAND V ITALY

0' All set for this clash of titans in Manaus. Buffon is out for Italy, and perhaps that opens up goal scoring opportunities for England by simply putting more shots on goal. A wonderful midfield matchup in Pirlo versus Gerrard, but if there is a favorite its the Italians. After bombing out in the group stages in 2010 as reigning champions, they'll look to do better this time around, and they have to be full of confidence. England are no pushovers though, and this should prove to be an excellent match. Joga Bonito.

5' Its nearly a goal for England starting out, as a shot off a deflection from Henderson from the top of the box tests the Italian keeper, who does well. Both teams coming out with pace, and its an excellent back and forth game thus far.

20' The game settling down a bit now. Both sides with a few very good chances. The keepers doing well for the most part. A dangerous rebound allowed by the English keeper Joe Hart, but no Italian strikers nearby to make him pay. On the opposite side, a great ball across the face of goal but no English striker can get to it in time. All around excellent play, and this is a fine example of world class football so far.

25' Nearly a goal for England twice, as a Welbeck cross gets deflected off the path of a charging English striker that had his man beat and was in on goal. Off the ensuing corner, chaos in the box, but the ball is eventually cleared. You have to wonder how many opportunities England will get, but coming agonizingly close this time.

35' And Italy open the scoring. It was really just a matter of time. They took over control of the game, and had some excellent chances. The goal comes off of a short corner, played in to Pirlo who steps over it in majestic fashion, leaving Marchisio wide open with no one around, and he slots it home. An excellent goal.

37' Oh my its an immediate equaliser for England and that exactly what the Doctor ordered. A brilliant counter attack and an excellent cross in from Rooney to Sturridge who is wide open at the far post and he won't miss from that distance. An excellent response from England to keep themselves in the game.

45+1' Oh My right before the half its nearly two for Italy and Balotelli chips the keeper but an Engliash defender comes charging in and clears it off the line with his head. Moments later, a shot riffles off the upright to again save Joe Hart, and we go in to the half level. What an entertaining match, and certainly this is being played at the highest level.

50' Italy pick up right where they left off, and its Balotelli who puts them ahead. It's a beautiful header on the far post off a beautiful cross. And England have to do better marking than that. Sturridge nearly equalises again dribbling the ball in on goal but takes one too many touches.

55' Perhaps a slightly controversial call as Gerrard is taken down in the box. England playing well and with purpose in the attack forcing the Italians to defense. They are finding space though, are not without chances. Still a very open game, but the strong Italian midfield are forcing England to play down the wings, leaving them open to a counter-attack.

62' Nearly the equaliser again, as Rooney finds himself with the ball in the box and with space, but sends it wide. He has to do better than that, and at least put the ball on target. Several chances here for the English, but their shots all going just wide. It might even be that thye're trying too hard for the corner, and perhaps need to simply put the ball on goal to test the keeper.

77' England still threatening, this time off of a beautiful free kick thats curved up and around the wall, but the Italian keeper does fantastically getting to the ball. England agonizingly close to scoring, and still plenty of time for them to find their equaliser.

94' A brief reprieve for the Italian defense, and Pirlo nearly locks up the win with a gorgeous free kick that beats Joe Hart but unceremoniously clamors off the cross bar. What a phenominal shot nonetheless. England with the majority of possession though in the later stages of the second half, attacking very well and creating chances, simply unable to finish, luck not on their side today.

Final' And its Italy that walk away with three points. An absolutely excellent match from England though, and they were just on the wrong side of the ball today. Excellent attacking from both sides, and good defending from the Italians to hold their lead. Both sides have to be happy with the form they came out with today, even if they aren't happy with the result. Italy able to breath a little now, and England now needing points from both of their remaining matches to advance. Wonderful football, and a full 90 played at the highest level.
