2013 FIFA Confederations Cup

General Comments

June 15
Its that time of year again, after the regular seasons have finished across most of the world, where we turn our attention to the International Schedule. In the midst of some excellent world cup qualifying campaigns, we're all set to enjoy the next two weeks that serve as an International Tournament of Champions. All six confederation champions joined by world champions Spain and the hosts of the next world cup Brasil in what should be a very exciting tournament.
Drawn into group A are Brasil, CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 Champions Mexico, AFC Asian Cup 2011 Champions Japan, and UEFA Euro 2012 runners-up Italy who qualify on account of Spain already qualifying as world cup champions. In Group B are Spain, CONMEBOL Copa America 2011 Champions Uruguay, OFC Nations Cup 2012 Champions Tahiti, and Africa Cup of Nations 2013 Champions Nigeria.
Although most teams view this tournament with less prestige than the World Cup, the pressure is on Brasil to put on a good performance, both as hosts and on the field. Having won this tournament in both 2009 and 2005, Brasil have failed to live up to their expectations in world cups by going out in the quarters in the 2010 and 2006, both times to the eventual runners-up. As hosts, they will be expected to do nothing less than win the world cup next year, and many view this tournament as an excellent preparation for a new guard in Brasilian soccer. It is important to note though that Brasil has only lost one competitive international match at home in the last 50 years, and no Brasilian wants to see that legacy broken.
Spain will also have some pressure to continue their magical run in international soccer that started back in 2008. Four years ago an up-start USA squad saw them out in the semis, and now Spain having collected trophies from every other international competition in the last 5 years will look to complete the set.
The Tahitians are surely just here for the experience, and although no one expects them to progress, I think we'd all like to see them exhibit a mature level of soccer.
Being forced to pick a champion I think one has to go with either Brasil or Spain, with the edge to Spain. Who can argue against their impeccable international record thus far? We shall find out soon enough. Joga Bonito!

Group Stage

Brasil v Japan, June 15
Well as we get set here for the opening match, one has to think that brasil will be coming out strong to set the tone for their entire tournament. Two names we expect to hear often are Neymar and Fred as Brasil should take the attack to Japan early on.
Oh and three minutes in its Neymar who has already put a beautiful half volley into the corner! This is exactly the start that Brasil wanted, and they won't let off the gas any time soon.
Well at the half its still 1-0. However, Brasil do look vulnerable on the counter and look weaker than expected in the middle. Japan doing quite well on the counter-attack, especially down the wings with the Brasilian fullbacks playing high. Japan will do well to keep Brasil at just one goal and will look to continue striking on the counter. A very exciting game but a little sloppy from the Brasilians thus far.
Japan coming out very strong at the start of the half, but a ball into the top of the box sees Paulinho turning strongly and firing it towards goal. The keeper should have done better, getting a hand on the ball, but nevertheless its 2-0. Don't count Japan out just yet, their counter is still looking strong as ever.
Right at the end of stoppage time an absolutely beautiful goal by Jo. Oscar making a superb run and delivery to Jo who slots it into the back of the net.
At the end of the day, I think we can look back and say that Brasil has a wealth of immensely skilled players. They did look a bit sloppy and unorganised, but it'll take perfection on a counterattack to beat them. Japan looking like a team well put together but just overmatched today. An excellent start for Brasil who will look to continue their tournament in fashion. Neymar playing excellent early but the second half was all Oscar's who asserted himself onto the game.

Mexico v Italy, June 16
Getting set for game 2 in group A, mexico will have a tall task ahead of them up against a strong italian side. If the italians can shut down Hernandez mexico will have to come up with a way to score, which they've found difficult in recent concacaf qualifying. That being said Mexico are the current Olympic Gold Medalists and nothing is ever a given. Seconds from kick-off now, should be a good one.
And a sensational free kick from Pirlo opens up the scoring. Several chances for both sides thus far, although the edge is definitely with the italian attack. Both sides also slightly too dramatic when going to the ground, but the referee doing a good job thus far. Mexico will hope to get one back before the half, but history is against them: Italy have never lost when Pirlo scores.
A poor tackle in the box against Dos Santos gives Mexico a penalty and a well taken shot by Hernandez has the sides equal. To be fair, Dos Santos was in clear and would have done well to score himself. Italy has to stay sharp, and Mexico will look to capitalize on a counter again.
Well 1 all at the half and Mexico are fortunate to be back level. They'll look to step the pace up and continue to attack the goal. Some drama on whether or not the fould on Dos Santos should have results in a Red, especially from a relatively strict referee, and italy are lucky to still have all 11. A very exciting match thus far and more level sides than yesterdays Brasil Japan match. Looking forward to another exciting 45.
A few controversial calls in the second half, including what was a clear penalty when Balotelli was taken down in the box, but he makes up for it with a beautiful finish from a flick on into the box, 2-1 with 15 mins left, and Italy are looking strong.
At full time its a good result for Italy. Excellent match though, very entertaining. Mexico will have to improve their defending as they have Brasil next match and their chances of moving on are looking tenuous now. After a relatively solid first half of refereeing, the second half was more suspect. Nevertheless an excellent start to group A.

Spain v Uruguay, June 16
An excellent fixture for us today as Spain are set against Uruguay. Spain will look to assert their dominant style of play and carefully probe the Uruguayan defense, but Uruguay can be very dangerous when given the opportunity. Forlan on the bench, but Casillas does get the start in goal and its good to see him back captaining the squad after being sent to the bench by Mourinho in Madrid. All set for kick-off, and this promises not to disappoint.
Well its a deflection off Lugano from a shot by Pedro that sees Spain up 1-0. They've absolutely dominated possession and have created a couple of very close opportunities, so well deserved. Uruguay are tiring themselves just chasing down the ball, and you have to be very worried for the Tahitian side if Spain are able to toy with Uruguay this easily.
Tensions rising with some physical play by both sides. Uruguay seeing some of the ball and a good opportunity from a free kick, but a beautiful touch by Iniesta supported by excellent running gives Soldado the ball in the box and he finishes well. 2-0 Spain, and we'll see how Uruguay responds. Hopefully without tensions boiling over.
Spain up by 2 at the half, but Uruguay not without chances. That being said, it's hard to imagine Uruguay putting in two without Spain scoring another. Excellent style of play from the Spanish that we've come to expect from arguably the best team in history.
An absolutely brilliant freekick by Luis Suarez left Casillas with no chance, and after it looked like Uruguay had given up, a bit of life now for Uruguay with only a couple of minutes left to try to eek out a draw.
At full time Spain are victorious. All the action in the second half coming after the Suarez goal, with the rest decidedly slower pace than the first half. Spain fully dominated the game, but Uruguay did play well and did not fair any worse than anyone else might have against this spain side. Some more inconsistent refereeing though, with some debatable red cards that perhaps ought to be awarded. Nevertheless, an excellent day of football and another beautiful free kick goal to add to the highlight reel.

Tahiti v Nigeria, June 17
As we get set here for Tahiti to make their debut in a major international tournament, you get the feeling that everyone views them as just being here to enjoy their time as VIP tourists. It is an exemplary feat for them to qualify for the tournament, becoming the first nation outside of Australia or New Zealand to do so from the OFC. That being said, they will do well to keep their total goals against under 15 during the group stages. An excellent response from the crowd for the Tahitian national anthem, and you can see the pride on the players' and coach's faces as well. This is a special moment for them, and I'm sure they will all view this as an excellent opportunity to gain experience, and you have to hope for a good result and some quality play from the Tahitians that at least befuddles their opponents more than they might have expected. Another excellent moment as the Tahitians share shell-necklaces with the Nigerian players on the field and the bench. One can't help but to root for the tiny polynesian nation as we get set for kick-off.
Oh no, bad luck for the Tahitians as a double-deflected shot finds its way into the Tahitian goal to give Nigeria the lead early five minutes in. That being said, the Tahitian side look very good, tackling well and a couple attacking chances and even the first shot on goal. They'll hope their luck improves going forward.
Five minutes later a poor give-away gives an opportunity for Oduamadi to dribble his way through the Tahitian defense and a good finish over the keeper sees it 2-0 early on. You have to hope the Tahitians don't become too demoralised and keep up the positive play.
The Tahitians holding defending well for the most part, but a fumbled save by the Tahitian keeper presents a goal on a silver platter for Nigeria and its 3-0 now. Poor luck and I suppose thats the difference between the likes of Casillas or Buffon and non-professional players.
This time an excellent save by the Tahitian keeper as two nigerian players break through the offside trap. Really thats more a poor decision by the Nigerian strikers, but that'll do well for the keeper's confidence.
After one half, the Tahitians with a couple of very good chances attacking well. The Nigerians look very sloppy, playing not as a team at all. I think everyone will want to see Tahiti convert on at least one of the chances they're able to create, and perhaps rather reservedly its the Nigerian half scolding his side at the half and the Tahitian side promoting his team to keep playing hard.
Oh there it is! Jubilation all around! Tahiti score a beautiful goal from a header off a deep corner. The Tahitian players and the crowd are going wild! Well deserved I think, lets see if they can snag another. That goal will do very well for their confidence.
Well another mistake in defense and Nigeria goes up 4-1. Just a bit of ping-pong with the ball deflecting off of multiple defenders trying to clear. Nigeria not playing very well at all, and Tahiti will do well to force Nigeria to score well instead of being gifted erroneous balls.
Tahiti looking tired now and Nigeria starting to play a better brand. A good run in behind the offside trap and followed by a good cross in sees Oduamadi notch a hattrick. Better from the Nigerians, and lets hope the score doesnt balloon too much.
Only a few minutes later and its a rebound off a good save that falls to a Nigerian striker who somehow pushes it into the back of the net. The Nigerians not even trying very hard but still racking up the goals now.
Oh nearly a second for Tahiti and a good diagonal cross gets headed on goal after the keeper comes off. Unfortunately the ball goes just wide. Bad luck for the Tahitians, and the ball really has not bounced their way today.
Well, after a full 90, despite giving up 6, I think the Tahitians have done well. An excellent response as the Tahitian side acknowledge the crowd for their support, and having scored a goal will go far for their pride. Perhaps on another day with a ball that bounced their way they might even have been able to eek out a 2-2 draw. We'll hope that they're able to play with the same spirit and tenacity in the rest of their group games. Nigeria on the other hand have a lot of work to do if they want to contend in this group. They did not look organized at all and at best their performance was lack-luster. They'll have some serious work ahead to try to steal points off of Spain or Uruguay.

Brasil v Mexico, June 19
All set for match day 2 for group A. Brasil will want to continue with a win, but Mexico will surely prove a tougher opponent than Japan. Howard Webb to officiate so we expect a well refereed game. All set for kick-off now with the crowds eager to see the selecao earn another positive result.
Oh its an early goal much in the fashion of Brasil's match against Japan. Neymar takes an excellent half volley that the keeper had no chance of stopping. Thats exactly the kind of start that Brasil and their fans were hoping for.
At the half Neymar's goal is still the only difference, but both sides not without a couple of chances. Brasil with some shaky defending at times, and Mexico just needs to improve their finishing.
Late in stoppage time Brasil seal there victory with a goal from Jo. An excellent display of dribbling from Neymar to take it deep into the box through two defenders sets up a beautiful pass that all Jo really has to do with is knock it into the open net. A An excellent way to end the match on a high, and Brasil are almost assuredly through to the next round. Neymar adding to his compilation highlight real. The Mexicans not able to find any goals, and their lack of offense is really starting to hurt. Hopefully they'll be able to find the next in their last fixture better than they have in their first two.

Italy v Japan, June 19
All set for the second of the day's Group A matches. Italy will look to secure a spot in the semi's with a win while Japan will hope to improve upon their performance against Brasil. This has the makings of a tightly contested match with both teams sure to play an attacking style.
Oh my Japan with an excellent early chance as a beautiful cross comes in. Unfortunately the striker getting a head to the ball headed it right at Buffon, who made a good save. That was very nearly 1-0.
Well Japan go ahead on a questionable awarded penalty after an errant pass back to the keeper forces Buffon to come out and make a hard tackle. They've certainly looked the more attacking side and have had the better chances thus far, and have done a good job maintaining possession in the Italian half. Italy have their work cut out for them for sure.
It's another for Japan as the Italians do a poor job clearing the ball and Kagawa finds the ball bouncing next to him leaving him to turn and take an excellent half volley just inside the post. An absolutely beautiful finish, and Japan is capitalizing on Italy's mistakes as any premier side ought to.
Italy with a real sense of urgency and they steal one back on a good header off of a corner by De Rossi. Let's see if they can keep the pressure on Japan, but regardless that goals I'm sure gives the half time talk a much more positive tone.
Right before the half Italy with an excellent opportunity but the shot hits the post. Either way, they are right back in this match and even though Japan have a lead they cannot be feeling too sure of themselves at the moment. A great half of attacking football, and the second seems like it will prove to be just as exciting. Italy half asleep for the first 30 minutes but turning on high-gear, and they'll look to continue that immediately at the start of the second half.
Well some poor clearing by Japan leads to a good cross into the box, but before Balotelli can knock it in a Japanese defender attempting to clear slides the ball right into the back of the net. Excellent early pressure from Italy, and just like that we're all level. Japan will need to find a way to curtail the Italian attack.
Oh my a penalty given to Italy on a hand ball off of a deflection. Not much the Japanese defender could have done to avoid contact, but nevertheless Italy now very quickly has taken full control of the game. Italy would serve themselves to keep attacking, as they've been able to score three in little more than 10 minutes, instead of sitting back and letting Japan get back in the game.
And after Italy take a lead, Japan retake control of the game and finally equalize off of a header from a free kick that just whizzes past Buffon. Japan respond well to Italy's quick 15 minutes of dominance. This game has not disappointed, and we'll see which of the sides takes control of the last 20 minutes of the match to try to steal a victory. Japan almost too unselfish at times, taking an extra pass when perhaps a shot is more appropriate, but opportunities abound on both sides of the ball.
Oh my a poor clearance from a cross sets up an Okazaki shot that hits the post and a follow up header hits the crossbar as Buffon thanks the soccer gods for keeping his side level. Japan controlling and attacking well, and Italy has let off the gas leaving Japan to end the deadlock.
Well Italy provide that quality possession is better than quantity, as their first real chance in several minutes creates an easy tap for Giovinco to put Italy ahead. With four minutes left we'll see if Italy can hold on in defense, as they are clearly tired and Japan attacking and keeping possession well.
Oh my a goal for Japan denied as another shot hits the crossbar and the player touching it in doing so from an offside position. Buffon will never want to work with another pair of woodwork, as the Italian goal is surely enchanted, denying Japan on several good opportunities.
Well only the Italians would have wanted this match end as soon as it did. Without doubt the most entertaining match thus far, and Japan made a strong argument that they deserved this one, but an excellent response to their first match against Brasil. Excellent attacking play from both side sides, and I think Japan has proved that they cannot be taken for granted next year at the world cup. Both Brasil and Italy through to the semis, and Japan and Mexico will play for pride. An excellent day for football on the whole.

Spain v Tahiti, June 20
Day two for group B now as the top ranked team in the world takes on the 138th ranked team. Tahiti did well against Nigeria to notch a goal and it would be a dream come true for them to score one today. Spain will probably start their bench players today, but with one of the most talented benches in the world that won't do much to alleviate any Tahitian suffering. These matches against Tahiti might have an effect on goal differential for who goes through to the semis, but Spain will be looking to take all 9 points from the group anyway. All set for kick-off now, as the Tahitian players again exchange shell necklaces with the opposition, reminded all of us that this is just a beautiful game.
Tahiti only able to hold on for four minutes as Torres slots a shot past the near side of the keeper. Tahiti playing a defensive game inviting Spain to attack and waiting for the counter, you have to imagine that breaking down Tahiti will not be a problem for Spain.
27 minutes well defended by Tahiti until David Villa gives a gorgeous pass for David Silva. Suprisingly few goals thus far. Excellent goal keeping from the Tahitian keeper Roche. Tahiti also playing a very high defensive line that has really compressed the field and Spain haven't quite perfected their timed runs to break the offside trap.
Seconds later Torres gets in behind the defense with a lot of space, good teach to beat the keeper, and thats a perfect example of the risk of playing the high defensive line.
David Villa joins the scorecard with a gorgeous pass in from David Silva, and it looks like Spain has perfected the formula to break the Tahitian line, as it appears they can now score at will. The Tahitians will look to keep the score down, hopefully in single digits, and will definitely venture hard to get at least one back.
At the half its 4-0, but Tahiti looking perhaps better than expected defending well. Spain took a full half hour to really get going, but they look only as though they're playing at 75%, and you have to hope that they keep this an honorable match and dont try to get too cheeky with their play.
David Villa notches his second minutes into the second half as a cross into the box sees three Spanish attackers and only one Tahitian defender with a foot near the ball. One has to wonder how many Spain will put on the scoreboard, but a mini-race between David Villa and Fernando Torres to be the first to notch the hat-trick.
Torres wins the race as he slots a gorgeous pass into the box from Jesus Navas after a beautiful run and becomes the first non-brasilian to score a hat-trick in Maracana Stadium, and the only spanish player to score 3 hat-tricks.
A mistake from Roche gifts a goal to David Villa to complete his hat-trick off a long ball and a beautiful run to beat the offside trap. Tahiti with a few chances on the counter and you have to think that's what they're playing for at this point.
Minutes later Juan Mata joins the score sheet, and Roche starting to come unravelled as the ball goes through his legs. His first half composure starting to slip, and for his sake you have to hope he can continue his early form which was excellent against this Spanish side.
Roche making some excellent saves until a penalty is given for a hand ball, but Torres hits the cross bar. He makes up for it minutes later with an excellent run in and around the keeper to make it four on the day.
David Silva with a beautiful turn and shot into the side netting, as he gets his second and makes its 10-0. Tahiti with a couple of good chances, and you have to root for them to get one back in style before the final whistle.
At the end of the match, Tahitians still holding their head up high, and you have to wonder when jerseys are exchanged whether the Spaniards will treasure the Tahitian jerseys more or the Tahitians will treasure the Spanish jerseys more. Another excellent match from Tahiti though to help remind us to keep o futebol pure, beautiful, and simple. Spain well on their way to the semifinals, and this match was a good confidence builder for some of the bench players.

Nigeria v Uruguay, June 20
A good match set here, as this will almost surely decide who goes through to the semis with Spain unless by some miracle the Nigerians beat Spain or Uruguay loses out to Tahiti later this week. Nigeria looked very sloppy in their opener against Tahiti, but we'll see if they can step it up here against a more evenly matched opponent. Uruguay would do well to play Cavani, Forlan and Suarez at the same time, as the brief time there were all on the pitch against Spain proved to be highly effective.

<the rest of the group games will be updated shortly>

Final

Brasil v Spain, June 30
Well its the dream final we were all hoping for. The fans decidedly brasilian, as they drown out the music during the national anthem, and as a player you love to play in that environment, especially with all the history of the Maracana. Brasil have a lot to prove here, and they are the underdogs if anyone is. Spain top of the world and not looking to relinquish the spot. This should prove to be an excellent match, and we're all set for kick-off.
A dream start for Brasil as a ball in isn't cleared in time and Fred puts Brasil up after only 90 seconds! His fourth goal of the tournament, and now something we haven't seen much of - Spain on their heels down a goal.
Nearly two for Brasil as Fred leaves a ball for Oscar in the box, but he pushes it just wide. Tensions certainly high and Spain playing with a real sense of urgency.
Lots of pushing and shoving as Spain complaining that Brasil are going down to the pitch too easily, and I'd have to agree. Let's hope it doesn't get too out of hand, both the diving and the pushing and shoving.
Sergio Ramos getting booked for taking Oscar down, and Brasil with a free kick just outside the box, but Hulk sends its flying. Spain stamping their possession style of play on the game, and Brasil so far happy to take the occasional counter-attack.
A beautiful counter-attack from the Brasilians after a Spanish corner. Neymar sending a gorgeous pass to Fred in behind the Spanish line and Casillas makes a good save to keep the Spaniards only down one goal.
Spain on a beautiful counter attack and Pedro was in free behind the defense and puts in a ball past the keeper but a majestic save as a defender rushes back and somehow manages to lift the ball over the crossbar. The equaliser was stopped mere inches short, and Brasil still holding on to the lead.
Minutes before the half its Neymar who sends a brilliant strike into the nearside top corner past Casillas, and to go from what appeared a sure equaliser to down two goals is surely the magic of Maracana that is willing Brasil onto victory.
At the half, Spain find themselves down two for the first time in a major international competition since they were eliminated from the last Confederations Cup by the USA four years ago. They'll have to dig deep and come up with something special to come back and win this one.
Disaster for the Spanish coming out of the half and Fred slots in his second off the post as Brasil are now up 3-0 on a team that everyone has branded as possibly the best ever. What a show for the fans here at Maracana, and you have to think this game is quickly approaching historic proportions for Brasil.
Oh my a penalty given as Marcelo clips Jesus Navas in the box. Spain need this goal to get back in this game. Its Sergio Ramos who steps up against Julio Cesar, and he pushes it wide to the left as it clips the post. More Maracana magic for the lore of this game.
A poor tackle from Pique as he takes down Neymar who was in on goal, and its a straight red. Spain will have to contend with a man down for the last twenty minutes, and this is the exact opposite of what the Spanish needed. They do not look the side we are used to at all, and Brasil have become the first team in four years to completely unravel this Spanish side.
The final whistle comes mercifully for Brasil, as they are three-time defending champions of the Confederation Cup. What a celebration in Brasil, and this is a signal to the rest of the world that no one, not even the best team in the world, will come and take from Brasil what they believe to be theirs. Disappointment for Spain, as they are completely broken down and look a B-rate squad against Brasil. Brasil will be looking forward to the world cup now with confidence at a high. They'll have to defeat some history though as the winner of the Confederations cup has never gone on to win the world cup. An excellent tournament for Brasil, and they'll get in some good practice celebrations that they'll hope to repeat a year from now.
